Two travellers can visit the same parks, see the same lions and still come home with very different trips. Often, the difference comes down to one choice: private or group. A Private Safari in Tanzania gives you your own vehicle, your own guide and full control over the day. A group safari means sharing the vehicle with other travellers, which keeps costs down and can be a lot of fun. Neither is automatically better. This guide explains how they really differ in cost, flexibility, comfort and wildlife viewing, so you can pick the right one for your trip. It’s based on what our team in Arusha sees from guests on both kinds of safari every week.
Quick tip before we start: the parks, the animals and the park fees are exactly the same either way. What changes is how you experience them.
What Is a Private Safari?
On a private safari, the vehicle and guide are booked for you alone, whether you’re a couple, a family or a group of friends. Nobody else joins.
- Your own 4×4 vehicle with a pop-up roof and a window seat for everyone
- A dedicated guide who focuses only on your interests
- A flexible schedule, from when you leave in the morning to how long you stay at each sighting
- A tailor-made itinerary, often with your choice of lodges and camps
What Is a Group (Shared) Safari?
On a group safari, you join other travellers, usually up to six or seven people, in one vehicle on a fixed itinerary with set departure dates.
- A shared vehicle and guide, with costs split between everyone
- A fixed route and timings, agreed in advance
- Set accommodation, often comfortable tented camps or simple lodges
- New company, as you’ll travel with people from all over the world

The Big Advantages of a Private Safari
You Control the Pace
Want to leave at 5:30am to catch the light? You can. Fancy a long lunch and a nap? That’s fine too. If a cheetah looks like it’s about to hunt, you can wait for an hour without anyone else in the vehicle getting restless.
Better for Photography
Photographers usually love private safaris. You get space to move, room for camera bags and a guide who’ll position the vehicle for the light. A photographic safari is almost always best done privately.
Easier With Children
Kids need snack breaks, toilet stops and the odd early finish. On a private trip, that’s no problem at all. Our family safaris are usually run privately for exactly this reason.
Ideal for Couples and Special Occasions
Honeymoons, anniversaries and milestone birthdays feel far more special without strangers in the back seat. Private sundowners, bush dinners and secluded tents are much easier to arrange. Take a look at our honeymoon and couples safaris.
A Guide Focused on You
Whether you love birds, big cats or learning about plants and tracks, your guide tailors every drive to you. Over a few days, many guests end up feeling like their guide is an old friend.
The Benefits of a Group Safari
Group safaris get unfairly overlooked. For the right traveller, they’re a great choice.
- Lower cost: sharing the vehicle, fuel and guide makes a big difference, especially for solo travellers.
- Good company: solo travellers often make lifelong friends around the campfire.
- More eyes: six people scanning the bush spot more animals than two.
- No planning stress: everything is decided for you, which some people love.
- Same wildlife: the animals don’t care how you booked.
If keeping costs down matters most, our budget-friendly tours offer great value while visiting the same parks.
The Downsides to Consider
Private Safari
- Higher cost per person, particularly for solo travellers or couples
- Fewer chances to meet other travellers on the road
- More decisions to make during planning (though a good operator helps a lot)
Group Safari
- Less flexibility, so you can’t stay longer at a sighting if others want to move on
- The middle seat is nobody’s favourite on a long drive
- Different interests: one person wants birds, another only lions, and the guide has to balance both
- Fixed departure dates may not match your holiday
A Typical Day: Private vs Group
Sometimes the clearest way to see the difference is to compare the same day in the Serengeti done both ways.
On a Group Safari
- Breakfast at 7am, then out on the drive with the rest of the group at 8am
- A great lion sighting, but after 15 minutes some guests want to move on to find elephants
- Back to camp at a set time for lunch, then the afternoon drive leaves at 4pm
- A fun evening sharing stories with the group over dinner
On a Private Safari
- You ask for a 6am start with a packed breakfast, to catch the golden light
- You find a cheetah family and stay for over an hour, watching the cubs play
- Picnic lunch under an acacia tree instead of heading back to camp
- A quiet sundowner on a kopje, just you and the view, before dinner
Both days are good. One is simply shaped entirely around you. If that appeals, our 7-day honeymoon safari and 8-day Best of Tanzania safari are both popular as private trips.
How Much More Does a Private Safari Cost?
Park fees and accommodation are charged per person either way, so they don’t change. The extra cost of going private comes from not sharing the vehicle, fuel and guide.
- Solo travellers: private is usually noticeably more expensive, as you cover the vehicle cost alone.
- Couples: the gap narrows, and many couples feel the flexibility is well worth it.
- Families and groups of four or more: a private safari can cost about the same as, or even less than, booking several seats on a group trip.
- Season matters: travelling in the green season (April, May and November) can make a private trip much more affordable.
Our team is always happy to price both options side by side so you can compare properly.
Which One Should You Choose?
Here’s a simple way to decide:
- Choose private if you’re a couple, a family, a keen photographer, celebrating something special or simply value flexibility.
- Choose group if you’re travelling solo, on a tighter budget, happy with a set plan and keen to meet new people.
- Consider a mix: some travellers join a group for part of the trip and go private for a special day, such as the Ngorongoro Crater or a migration crossing.
If you’re following the herds, private trips make it easier to wait at the river for crossings. Our Great Migration experience page explains timings. For the Big Five, our 6-day Big Five safari can be run privately for maximum sighting time.
Tips Whichever You Choose
- Ask exactly how many people will be in the vehicle and whether everyone gets a window seat
- Check what’s included, from park fees and meals to drinking water and airport transfers
- Read the itinerary carefully for how many hours are spent driving each day
- Choose an operator with experienced local guides, as the guide matters more than anything else
- Check current park rules and fees on the Tanzania National Parks website
