Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Holiday: The Best of Both Worlds

There’s a moment most people have on their first afternoon in Zanzibar. Feet in warm sand, a cold drink in hand, they think back to the dawn game drive a few days earlier and realise they’ve just had two completely different holidays in one trip. That contrast is exactly why a Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Holiday is so popular. You get lions, elephants and the Serengeti, then white beaches, turquoise water and Swahili culture, all without leaving the country. This guide explains how to combine the two well: how many days to give each, which order to do them in, where to stay on the island and how the logistics work. It’s based on what our team in Arusha plans for guests all year round.

The short version: do the safari first, give the beach at least four nights, and fly between the two rather than driving.

Why Combine a Safari With Zanzibar?

  • Rest after early starts. Safari days begin before sunrise and involve hours in a vehicle. A few lazy days on the beach let you recover properly.
  • Two very different experiences. Dust and wildlife, then sea and sand. Each one feels fresher because of the other.
  • Short, easy flights. Zanzibar is roughly an hour or so by plane from Arusha or Kilimanjaro.
  • Culture as well as nature. Stone Town, spice farms and fishing villages add a whole new side to the trip.
  • Perfect for celebrations. Honeymoons and anniversaries in particular suit the bush-and-beach combination.
  • Good value. Zanzibar has hotels for every budget, from simple beach bungalows to boutique resorts, so the beach part can be tailored to what you want to spend.

Safari First or Beach First?

Almost always, we recommend safari first. Here’s why:

  • You arrive fresh and full of energy for the early game drives
  • You finish the holiday relaxed, rather than tired from long drives
  • Zanzibar has good international connections, making it an easy place to fly home from
  • Any washing of dusty clothes can happen at the beach hotel

The only time beach-first makes sense is when flight prices or availability make it much cheaper, or if you’re arriving very tired and want a few days to adjust first.

How Many Days for Each?

The right split depends on your total holiday length. Here are the combinations that work best:

Total TripSafariZanzibarBest For
7 to 8 days3 to 4 days3 to 4 nightsShort breaks, travellers on limited leave
9 to 10 days5 days4 to 5 nightsMost couples and families
11 to 12 days6 to 7 days4 to 5 nightsFirst-timers wanting the full northern circuit
14 days or more7 to 8 days6 nights or moreHoneymoons and once-in-a-lifetime trips

Less than three nights on Zanzibar usually feels rushed, since you lose part of a day to transfers. If you’re short on time, it’s often better to trim the beach rather than the safari, but don’t cut either too far. Browse our safari tours to see which safari lengths fit around a beach stay.

Planning the Safari Part

Most safari and beach combinations focus on Tanzania’s northern circuit, which starts in Arusha.

To save time, many travellers fly from the Serengeti straight to Zanzibar instead of driving back to Arusha. It costs a little more but saves a long day on the road.

Choosing Where to Stay on Zanzibar

Zanzibar’s coastline varies a lot, and the right area depends on what you want from your beach days.

  • Nungwi and Kendwa (north): swimmable beaches at most tides, lively bars and beautiful sunsets. Great for couples and groups.
  • Paje and Jambiani (south-east): long white beaches with big tides that pull the sea far out. Laid-back and popular with kitesurfers.
  • Matemwe and Kiwengwa (north-east): quiet, with a coral reef close to shore. Good for snorkelling and peaceful stays.
  • Michamvi (south-east tip): one of the few east-coast spots with sunset views over the water.
  • Stone Town: not a beach base, but worth one or two nights for history, food and architecture.
The east coast has strong tides, so at low tide the sea can be hundreds of metres away. It’s beautiful in its own way, but if swimming at any time matters to you, the north is the safer choice.

Things to Do on Zanzibar

The beach is reason enough, but there’s plenty more if you want it.

  • Stone Town walking tour: narrow lanes, carved wooden doors and centuries of trading history. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Spice farm visit: see and taste cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla growing.
  • Snorkelling and diving: Mnemba Atoll is known for clear water, colourful fish and turtles.
  • Jozani Forest: home to the rare red colobus monkey, found only on Zanzibar.
  • Sunset dhow cruise: a traditional sailing boat, a cold drink and a pink sky.
  • Forodhani Gardens: the evening food market for Zanzibar pizza and grilled seafood.

Best Time for a Safari and Beach Trip

  • June to October: dry, sunny and ideal for both. This is peak season, so book early.
  • Late December to February: hot, mostly dry beach weather, plus calving season in the southern Serengeti.
  • November: short rains, usually brief showers, with good value and green landscapes.
  • April and May: the long rains. Many beach hotels close or reduce rates, and safari roads get muddy. Best avoided unless you want very quiet, low-cost travel.

If you want to time it with the herds, our Great Migration experience page shows where they are each month.

A Sample 10-Day Safari and Zanzibar Itinerary

To show how it fits together, here’s a well-balanced 10-day plan that many of our guests choose:

  • Day 1: arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and rest at a lodge near Arusha
  • Day 2: drive to Tarangire for an afternoon with the elephants
  • Days 3 and 4: head into the Serengeti for two full days of game drives
  • Day 5: morning in the Ngorongoro Crater, overnight on the crater rim
  • Day 6: fly from Arusha to Zanzibar and settle into your beach hotel
  • Days 7 to 9: beach time, with a Stone Town tour, spice farm or snorkelling trip if you fancy it
  • Day 10: fly home from Zanzibar

Practical Tips and Logistics

  • Luggage: small planes have weight limits, often around 15kg in soft bags. Pack light and leave hard suitcases at home.
  • Two wardrobes in one bag: neutral colours for safari, light beachwear for Zanzibar. Laundry is available at most lodges.
  • Dress modestly off the beach: Zanzibar is mainly Muslim, so cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and villages.
  • Sun and sea: pack reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the coral.
  • Entry requirements: rules for visiting Zanzibar can differ slightly from the mainland, so check current requirements before you travel.
  • One operator for both: booking safari, flights and beach together means one point of contact if plans change.

Who Is This Trip Best For?

  • Honeymooners and couples: romance in the bush and on the beach. See our 9-day honeymoon safari or honeymoon and couples safaris.
  • Families: kids love the wildlife and then burn off energy in the sea. Our family safaris can include a beach extension.
  • First-time visitors: the easiest way to see Tanzania’s two biggest highlights in one trip.
  • Kilimanjaro climbers: after a Kilimanjaro climb, a few days on the beach is a well-earned reward.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from the safari parks to Zanzibar?

Most travellers take a short domestic flight from Arusha, Kilimanjaro or a Serengeti airstrip. It’s quick and saves a very long overland journey.

How long should I spend on Zanzibar?

Four to five nights is ideal. Three is the minimum to relax properly once you account for transfer time.

Is it better to book safari and Zanzibar together?

Yes. One operator can coordinate flights, transfers and timings, which makes the whole trip smoother.
